Divine Liturgy & Prayer

Annotated Divine Liturgy Guide

A step-by-step study path for the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom

This guide follows the major movements of the Divine Liturgy so a reader can understand what is happening, why it matters, and which Scriptures or study pages connect to each step.

01 - Preparation

Proskomedia: The Gifts Are Prepared

Liturgical Action

Bread and wine are prepared before the public beginning of the Liturgy.

Meaning

The offering of the people is gathered around Christ, the Lamb of God. The preparation already teaches that the Eucharist is not isolated from the Church, the living, the departed, and the whole economy of salvation.

Study Prompt

Notice how Orthodox worship begins with offering, remembrance, and preparation before public proclamation.

02 - Gathering

Blessed Is The Kingdom

Liturgical Action

The Liturgy opens by blessing the kingdom of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Meaning

The service begins eschatologically. The Church does not merely remember religious ideas; it enters worship directed toward the kingdom of God and the life of the Trinity.

Study Prompt

Read the opening as the frame for everything that follows: worship is Trinitarian, ecclesial, and kingdom-oriented.

03 - Prayer

The Great Litany

Liturgical Action

The deacon or priest leads petitions for peace, salvation, the Church, the world, civil authorities, travelers, the sick, captives, and all in need.

Meaning

The first major act of the gathered Church is intercession. The Liturgy teaches that prayer is cosmic and communal, not merely private.

Study Prompt

Track how often peace, mercy, preservation, and remembrance are requested.

04 - Psalmody

Antiphons And Hymns

Liturgical Action

Psalms, refrains, and hymns are sung as the Church prepares to hear the Gospel.

Meaning

The Liturgy is saturated with Scripture. Psalmody trains the heart to pray biblically, and hymnody confesses doctrine through worship.

Study Prompt

Use this step to connect liturgy with the Psalms and with the later Akathist and hymn study path.

05 - Scripture

The Little Entrance

Liturgical Action

The Gospel book is carried in procession and brought before the people.

Meaning

The entrance directs the Church's attention to Christ who speaks in the Gospel. It is not a break in worship but a visible sign of the Word coming into the assembly.

Study Prompt

Connect this movement to the Incarnation: the Word comes to His people and is proclaimed.

06 - Scripture

Epistle, Gospel, And Homily

Liturgical Action

The apostolic reading and Gospel are proclaimed, followed by preaching or instruction.

Meaning

The Liturgy of the Catechumens forms hearers through Scripture before the Eucharistic offering. Doctrine, moral life, and sacramental worship belong together.

Study Prompt

When building future app features, this step should connect lectionary readings to the KJV reader, LXX reader, and study notes.

07 - Offering

The Great Entrance

Liturgical Action

The prepared gifts are carried solemnly to the altar.

Meaning

The Church brings the gifts forward in remembrance and prayer. This is a movement of offering, not a theatrical scene.

Study Prompt

Consider how the whole life of the faithful is gathered and offered back to God in thanksgiving.

08 - Confession

The Creed

Liturgical Action

The faithful confess the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed before the Eucharistic prayer.

Meaning

The Eucharist is not separated from the apostolic faith. The Church confesses the Trinity, the Incarnation, the cross, the resurrection, the Church, baptism, and the age to come.

Study Prompt

Use this step to connect liturgy with councils and doctrinal study.

09 - Thanksgiving

The Anaphora

Liturgical Action

The Church lifts up the gifts in thanksgiving and remembers creation, salvation, the Last Supper, the cross, resurrection, ascension, and kingdom.

Meaning

This is the central Eucharistic prayer. Orthodox worship remembers Christ's saving work before God and offers thanksgiving through Christ.

Study Prompt

Study the anaphora as the heart of eucharistia: thanksgiving, remembrance, offering, and communion.

10 - Invocation

The Epiklesis

Liturgical Action

The Church calls upon the Father to send the Holy Spirit upon the people and the gifts.

Meaning

The Eucharist is Trinitarian: offered to the Father, in Christ, by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is invoked for the sanctification of the gifts and the faithful.

Study Prompt

Do not isolate the gifts from the people; the prayer asks that the Church also be changed for communion and holiness.

11 - Preparation For Communion

The Lord's Prayer

Liturgical Action

The faithful pray the prayer taught by Christ before approaching communion.

Meaning

The Eucharistic approach is filial: the Church comes to the Father as children in the Son, asking for daily bread, forgiveness, deliverance, and the kingdom.

Study Prompt

Read the Lord's Prayer here as preparation for communion, not as a detached devotional text.

12 - Communion

Holy Communion

Liturgical Action

The faithful receive the Body and Blood of Christ.

Meaning

Communion is the culmination of the Liturgy: union with Christ, participation in His life, and communion with the Church. It is approached with faith, repentance, preparation, and reverence.

Study Prompt

Connect this step to John 6, the Last Supper, and 1 Corinthians 10-11.

13 - Sending

Thanksgiving And Dismissal

Liturgical Action

The faithful give thanks and are dismissed to go in peace.

Meaning

The Liturgy sends the faithful back into the world. Christian life continues as prayer, mercy, repentance, and witness.

Study Prompt

The end of the Liturgy is the beginning of lived Eucharistic life.
